REAL AUGMENTED REALITY TELEPRESENCE // MOBILE AR LAB // NYU!!!

Open Telepresence makes a real time, 3d copy of a physical location that can then be seen with AR at any location around the world. Open Telepresence lets people see another person, place, and or event as it’s happening in full 3d from the other side of the world. People use a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet to view the 3d content. The experience is like viewing a hologram of another real world location.
People walking down the street can see building exterior walls disappear and look inside them in and see what's happening at that moment. Users can also see other locations in real-time viewed around the world. Users can place an ocean beach in front of their office work space. User’s living room walls will dissolve and they could see their son or daughter's living room across from them. People can see and talk to each other in real-time 3D from across the world. Reporters and bloggers can share events from remote locations with the rest of the time. Open Telepresence creates the final generation of networked communication by allowing users to be present in 2 locations at once. The project will be open-source and compatible with Unity.

This project was made by NYU's Mobile AR Lab [directed by Mark Skwarek].

VIDEO: Tandon’s Cardboard VR Goggles Take Class of 2020 to Mars

Earlier this week, WSN reported on Tandon’s cardboard virtual reality googles that it’s giving out to admitted students in the class of 2020. Meant to be paired with the Tandon Vision app, which can be downloaded on Apple’s App Store and is the true innovation of the two, the creation is just the latest in a string of virtual reality developments from NYU’s Brooklyn-based engineering school. Now, the WSN video team is here to show you what all the hype is about.

Co Teaching w Jeremy Bailey!

I'm co teaching the Mobile Augmented Reality Studio grad class at NYU with Jeremy Bailey this fall semester! Take it if you can....

DM-GY 6133 MOBILE AUGMENTED REALITY STUDIO

This course examines the affect of augmented reality [AR] on our bodies. Augmented reality is changing the way we understand our world in relationship to software by overlaying our physical reality with real-time, interactive digital experiences. Augmented reality has traditionally focused on the ways in which software might adapt our physical environment but this class will focus on how it affects our bodies – our behaviours and our identities. The body will be examined as both a software interface and a mutable object, capable of taking on new forms and capabilities. Students will gain a strong understanding of both the theory and technology necessary to create innovative experiences that push our collective understanding of the body as software.
